OAKBROOK TERRACE— To combat summer slide, State Senator Suzy Glowiak is launching a Summer Reading Club for children and young people who live in the 24th State Senate District.

Glowiak (D-Western Springs), who serves as a member of the Senate’s Education Committee, is launching a Summer Reading Club to counteract summer learning loss which occurs when students “turn off their brains” during summer months.

“Reading allows our mind to travel and explore the world around us,” Glowiak said. “Reading as little as 20 minutes a day can help keep students’ minds sharp and help promote better educational outcomes in the long run.”

Studies indicate that 2 months of reading skills and 2 1/2 months of math skills are lost over a single summer.

The Summer Book Club requires students to read eight books of their choice during the summer break, record the names of the books and return the form to Glowiak’s office by Aug. 2.

Participants will be invited to a pizza party with Glowiak.

“Our goal is to encourage a commitment to learning,” Glowiak said. “Reading can be fun. Sometimes children simply need a little kick start.”

OAKBROOK TERRACE— State Senator Suzy Glowiak (D-Western Springs) is reminding local residents there is still time to participate in her first 24th State Senate District photo contest.

“Communities across the 24th Senate District have built a strong economy, affordable housing options and solid education systems,” Glowiak said. “This competition is open to all residents of our district to join me in sharing the beauty we see every day with people across our state.”

Participants will be asked to submit a photo that encompasses the communities of the 24th State Senate District. The winners will be displayed in Glowiak’s Springfield and district offices.

“It has been a joy to see the district from local residents’ point of view,” Glowiak said. “I cannot wait to have local photographs in our district and Springfield offices.”

The 24th State Senate District includes all or parts of Elmhurst, Oakbrook Terrace, Wheaton, Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Darien, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Western Springs, Westmont and Willowbrook. Contest rules are as follows:

● Photos can be of historical sites, buildings or landmarks as well as scenic sights within the 24th State Senate District. Participants must identify locations with street addresses or the closest intersections. The name of the location is also acceptable if it is a park or school.
● Contestants may submit as many entries as they would like before the deadline of 5 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019.
● Include name, phone number and location of the picture with every entry.
● Winning entries will be displayed in Glowiak’s district and Springfield offices. The photographer will be invited to the unveiling of their photograph.
● The contest is open to all ages.

ELMHURST – State Senator Suzy Glowiak (D-Western Springs) is inviting local residents to a series of Town Hall Tuesdays to talk major new laws after a historic legislative session in Springfield.

Glowiak is kicking off her series of town hall meetings at the Elmhurst City Hall (209 North York, Elmhurst, IL) on Tuesday, June 11 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

“I strive to ensure the citizens of the 24th Senate District’s voices are heard,” Glowiak said. “To help me better represent residents, it is imperative that we have respectful and informative conversations. Town Hall Tuesdays are a great opportunity to connect and have a meaningful discussion on policies that concern us all.”

Additional Town Hall Tuesday meetings will be held on June 18 at the Lombard Village Hall (255 East Wilson Ave., Lombard, IL), July 2 at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center (535 Duane St., Glen Ellyn, IL) and July 9 at the Hinsdale Library (20 East Maple St., Hinsdale) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Glowiak recently completed her first legislative session in Springfield. The freshman Senator prioritized bipartisan legislation that protected the privacy of assault survivors, educated workers to help end human trafficking and fought youth homelessness in Illinois.

Glowiak worked across party lines and also split from her democratic colleagues to vote against tax increases and push for fiscal responsibility in state government.

“We have had a busy session in Springfield,” Glowiak said. “There were trying issues and lively debates. Throughout the process, my priority has remained placing the people of the 24th State Senate District before politics.”

OAKBROOK TERRACE— State Senator Suzy Glowiak is searching for community organizations and small businesses to participate in her series of summer senior fairs.

The first of several planned free seniors fairs will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, June 17 at the first gym of the Family Recreation Center located at the Oak Brook Park District (1450 Forest Gate Road, Oak Brook).

“Our goal for these senior fairs is to create a one-stop shop for local residents to connect with as many local and state organizations and agencies to learn more about services available,” Glowiak said.

Glowiak is requesting vendors begin setup for the senior fair one hour prior to doors opening to the general public.

The second senior fair will be on Monday, July 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lisle Park District (1925 Ohio St, Lisle).
